Comedians in Cars getting Coffee - Sn.8 Ep.5 Jerry Seinfeld & Lorne Michaels

Lorne Michaels:  There's an old Shelley Berman joke.  About [when] his grandfather came to America.  He was told that the streets were paved with gold.  And when he got to America he found out 3 things:

1. That the streets were not paved with gold

2. That the streets were not paved.

3. That he was gonna be the guy paving them.

And I think that anything you start ... you're in that position.

Inherent in this insightful joke is a juxtaposition of two ideas.  1) Pursuing a particular path that is laid out already and 2) Creating your own.  Sometimes in our lives, the need to create our own way comes out of necessity.  We find ourselves in situations that we wind up innovating out of, or getting out of via hard work and persistence.  Throughout your pursuits in life you may find that things are exactly as you expected them to be, utterly different than what you expected, or a grayish hue in between that leans a bit more one way than the other (the latter is what I experience most often).  Regardless of where you're at when you have that revelation, know that you're exactly where you need to be to gain the necessary experience and life lessons to get yourself to where you want to be.  Don't just go trough the motions.  Experience, take them in and take them with you on your journey.
